This is a cool new thing I'm working on. Although Maya doesn't specifically feature support for 'metaballs', the animation can be done through the use of nParticles and converting said nParticles to polygons. The newly created 'deformer' node can then be tweaked to alter the size of the 'blobs' among other things.

 

I'm still seeing if I can do more with these things. Stay tuned.
